When an eSIM remains "pending": what's wrong, why, and where to find out
There's a group of people who no longer buy travel data in advance, and it's not because of general distrust.
It's from experience. They tried it once, it didn't work, and since then they'd rather overpay than risk it again.
That group usually tells the same story: they bought it, arrived at their destination, scanned the code, and the new line appeared on their phone with one word next to it. Pending. And there it stayed.
This article is for that group, and it covers three things: why it happens, what you can do about it, and why where you install it matters more than which brand you buy.

What "pending" means
The pending status means your phone recognized the profile but didn't complete its activation on the network.
The most common causes are specific, and none of them are mysterious:
- The profile was downloaded but not selected as the active line in settings.
- The device needs additional network configuration that wasn't applied.
- The profile was installed but your phone hasn't searched for a compatible network yet, which happens if you install it in a country where that profile has no coverage.
- There was a download error and the profile was left incomplete.
That third point is important and explains quite a few cases: it's normal for a profile for a specific destination not to show service until you're in that destination. What's not normal is for it not to appear correctly installed in the list of lines.
The case of manual APN on Android
There's one technical cause that breaks many installations and that almost nobody anticipates.
Some Android devices require you to manually enter a network configuration setting called an APN for the profile to go from installed to having data. If that setting isn't entered or is typed incorrectly, the result is the most confusing symptom of all: your phone shows signal but doesn't load anything.
It's a thirty-second step when you know it exists, and a whole night when you don't.
This is precisely the kind of problem that's much better solved at home than in a hotel, because it requires finding the instructions, typing them carefully, and sometimes retrying.
The refund policy, which almost nobody reads
It's worth pausing here because this is where most people feel cheated, and not always because there was bad faith.
Many refund policies in this category only apply if your data usage was practically zero. And some refund as credit to buy again on the same platform, not as cash.
The result is a frustrating situation: someone who spent two hours trying to get the product to work used data during those attempts, and that usage can eliminate their right to a full refund. In other words, trying to fix the problem penalizes you.
That's why, before buying any product of this type, you should read two things: whether the refund is in cash or store credit, and what usage threshold invalidates it.
Store credit is not a refund. It's an obligation to keep being a customer of someone who already failed you.
You can get it sorted right now, from your own home, and it'll take you less time than reading the rest of this article.

The conclusion people usually get wrong
Anyone who goes through this usually draws a reasonable but wrong conclusion: that these things don't work.
It's understandable, because everything they experienced is real. What's usually wrong is the cause they attribute it to.
Here's a comparison. If someone wears new shoes for the first time on a twelve-mile hike and gets blisters, they can conclude two things. That the shoe brand is bad. Or that breaking in new shoes on the day of the hike was the mistake.
The brand might be bad. But if the conclusion is the first one, that person misses out on something that works for most people. If it's the second, they have a concrete instruction for next time.
The same goes for digital profiles. Most problems happen during installation, and installation can be done anytime, anywhere.
Where the risk lies, and what you can control
The risk of an installation failing never goes away. What you can choose is where it's discovered.
Installed upon landing: no network to look up the solution, no time, jet lagged, in another language, with the money already spent and no alternative but to buy something a second time at an emergency price.
Installed at home three or four days before: with Wi-Fi to search, time to write to support and get a reply, the chance to retry, and the option to manage a refund without having left the country.
It's exactly the same failure. The setting changes, and the setting changes everything.
Someone who has already been burned once actually has an advantage: they know exactly what symptom to look for. If that word shows up again, this time it will appear on a Tuesday night at home.
What makes installing it in advance possible
The immediate objection is that buying early means wasting days.
With PuraSIM that's not the case: the plan days run from first use at your destination, not from purchase, and you have 180 days to install it. You can buy it today, install and check it this week, and travel in two months without losing a single day.
That detail isn't a frill: it's what makes the entire recommendation above viable.
If you're already clear on it, it's sorted in ten minutes and the discount applies automatically.

Checklist to avoid repeating the experience
Before buying:
- Dial `*#06#` on your phone. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the device supports digital profiles. Two warnings for Mexico: several Redmi and Xiaomi models sold here are the Latin American version and don't include it even if the international spec sheet for the same model says they do, and being unlocked is not the same as being compatible.
- Read the refund policy: whether it's in cash or store credit, and what usage threshold invalidates it.
- Check which channel support is available on and in what language.
- Verify that the plan covers the country or region of your trip.
After buying and before traveling:
- Install using your home Wi-Fi, at least three days before flying.
- Check that the line appears correctly in the network settings.
- Verify that your Mexican line is still active: request a test call and a test message.
- Leave the profile installed but don't set it as your data line until you reach your destination.
- Save the support contact in your phone, so you don't have to search for it from a place with no data.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to have no service while still in Mexico?
Yes. A profile for a specific destination won't find a compatible network until you get there. What you should see is the line correctly installed in the list.
Can I uninstall and reinstall if something goes wrong?
It depends on the provider and the type of profile. It's best to ask before deleting anything, because some profiles can only be installed once.
How is a problem handled with PuraSIM?
By email and WhatsApp, with people who reply in English. There is no phone support.
It already happened to me with another brand, why would this be different?
The biggest difference isn't the brand but the timing of the installation. Installing it at home with days to spare turns almost any failure into a minor inconvenience.
What if the problem is coverage and not installation?
That's a different cause and it's worth distinguishing. If the profile appears correctly installed and active but can't find a network in a specific area, it's usually a coverage issue with the local carrier in that spot. No brand covers every part of a country equally, and rural or mountainous areas are where it's most noticeable.
How far in advance should I install it?
Three or four days is a reasonable margin: enough time to spot a problem, write to support, get a reply, and if needed, handle a refund before flying.
Should I keep the email with the code?
Yes, and you should also keep it somewhere accessible without internet, like a screenshot in your gallery. If you need to reinstall something while traveling, that file is the first thing you'll need and it's usually in an email you can't open.
What to keep in mind
- The pending status has specific causes, and the most common one is a configuration issue, not a product issue.
- Some Android devices require an additional network setting, and that step trips up many installations.
- It's worth checking beforehand whether the refund is in cash or store credit, and what usage would void it.
- The useful takeaway is not that these things don't work, but that you shouldn't set them up for the first time at your destination.
- The risk doesn't disappear: it moves to a place where it costs you nothing.
PuraSIM sells data plans by destination that you buy and install from Mexico before you travel, with a fixed price, for over 200 destinations. Customer support is by email and WhatsApp, with people who reply in English. There is no phone support.
