Traveling to Rwanda with an eSIM is the easiest way to have internet as soon as you land at Kigali International Airport. You connect to the local mobile networks of MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda, which provide good 4G coverage in major cities, without changing your physical SIM card or looking for a place to buy a local SIM. You buy the plan before leaving home, activate it by scanning a QR code, and arrive in the country with data ready to use Google Maps, WhatsApp, a translator, and your reservations.
Rwanda is not part of the European Union, so your carrier's roaming here is not included in your usual plan. Typically, you would pay roaming fees of between 10 and 15 euros per day, or extremely high prices per megabyte that quickly rack up your bill without you realizing it. With a data eSIM, you pay a fixed price upfront and control exactly what you spend. It's the same saving you look for when comparing roaming with a local SIM card, but without queues or paperwork.
Plans start from €3.95 and the price depends on the gigabytes and days you need. For a short getaway or a weekend safari, 1 or 3 GB is usually enough if you use maps and messaging. If you're going to be traveling the country for one or two weeks, uploading content, or sharing your connection, it's better to choose 5 to 10 GB. Calculate about 1 GB for every two to three days of moderate use and add more if you watch a lot of video.
A local physical SIM card requires you to register with your passport at an MTN or Airtel store and change your chip, with the risk of losing it. The eSIM is completely digital: it coexists with your usual number on the same phone, you activate it in two minutes, and you keep WhatsApp and calls from your usual line. Fewer hassles, zero plastic, and the peace of mind of arriving already connected.
Yes. Coverage is solid in Kigali, the capital, and also in cities like Butare (Huye), Musanze (gateway to Volcanoes National Park), Gisenyi (Rubavu) by Lake Kivu, and Ruhengeri. It relies on the infrastructure of MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda, the two operators with the widest reach in the country. In rural areas or within national parks, the signal may be weaker, which is normal in any mountainous destination. Check all destinations if your trip combines several African countries.
After purchase, you will receive a QR code by email with instructions. You scan it from your phone's settings while still in Spain with WiFi, and upon arriving in Rwanda, you just need to activate data roaming for that eSIM to start browsing. No complicated setup is needed. If it's your first time, follow our eSIM guide step by step, and you'll have internet in Kigali in a matter of minutes.
