With our eSIM for Uruguay, you'll arrive in Montevideo with mobile data working from the moment you turn on your phone, without airport queues or needing to change your physical SIM card. You'll connect to the local networks of Antel, Movistar, and Claro, which provide 4G/LTE coverage in major cities and a good part of the coast. You can book Uber, open Google Maps, send WhatsApp messages, and share photos just like at home, paying a fixed rate that you know before traveling.
Uruguay is not part of the European Union, so your home "roam like at home" plan does not apply here. Using your line without precautions can cost between €10 and €15 per day, and a couple of videos or a call can skyrocket your bill without warning. The eSIM eliminates that surprise: you only pay for the data you contract and browse at local prices. Plus, you don't lose your usual number, which remains available to receive SMS from your bank or verification codes.
Plans start from €3.95. For a weekend getaway to Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento, 1 GB is usually enough; for one or two weeks traveling through Punta del Este and the coast, estimate between 3 and 5 GB if you use maps and messaging daily; and if you work remotely or share many videos, 10 GB or an unlimited plan is better. You can see all options and compare rates in all destinations.
A traditional SIM card requires finding an Antel or Claro store, presenting documentation, and registering the line, which in Uruguay can take time. The eSIM is a digital chip: you buy it before you leave, install it at home with Wi-Fi, and it arrives active. There's no chip to lose, you keep your usual SIM inside your phone, and you can switch between them from the settings whenever you want.
Yes. Coverage relies on the Antel network, the state operator with the best reach in the country, as well as Movistar and Claro. You'll have good signal in Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento, Maldonado, Salto, and Piriápolis, as well as on the most frequented routes and resorts on the Atlantic coast. In rural inland areas, the signal may be weaker, which is normal for any operator.
Upon purchase, you will receive a QR code by email. Scan it from your phone settings while still in Spain with Wi-Fi, and the eSIM will be installed; upon landing in Montevideo, simply activate data roaming for that profile and you're good to go. The entire process takes a couple of minutes and no technical knowledge is required. If it's your first time, follow the step-by-step instructions in our eSIM guide and you'll be connected from the start of your trip.
