eSIM for Europe 1 month — One plan to travel through multiple countries
In short: For a month-long trip to Europe, PuraSim's 1-month Europe eSIM gives you local data from the moment you land, without changing cards when crossing borders and without added roaming. We recommend 30-40 GB for 30 days on a typical multi-country trip. Before purchasing, check which countries are included in the plan: not all include the UK, Switzerland, or the Balkans. Traveling to Europe is an incredible experience, but arriving without data can ruin the first moments: no Google Maps to get out of the airport, no way to search for the hotel, no way to contact whoever is waiting for you. The solution is simple and has been the standard among experienced travelers for years: an eSIM for Europe.

In this guide, we tell you everything you need to know before traveling to Europe: what coverage you can expect in multiple European countries, how many GB you really need, how to activate the eSIM, and the best connectivity tips from those who have already traveled there.

Spoiler: with PuraSim, you have local data from the moment the plane lands, without contracts, without a physical SIM, and without surprises on your bill.

Why do you need an eSIM for traveling to Europe?

International roaming from Latin American operators or those outside the EU is usually much more expensive than contracting local data, with daily or MB rates that skyrocket depending on the destination. A local eSIM gives you data at local prices, without absurd daily limits and with 4G or 5G speeds where the network allows it.

The difference between using roaming and a PuraSim eSIM is huge:

  • Traditional roaming: fixed daily rate even if you barely use data, speed often limited to 3G, surprise bills upon return.
  • PuraSim eSIM for Europe: you only pay for what you contract, full local data at maximum available speed, activation in 5 minutes from anywhere.

In addition, with an eSIM, you can keep your original phone number active to receive calls and SMS, as the eSIM operates in a separate virtual slot. You don't have to choose between local connectivity and your usual number.

For Europe, having stable data is especially important: a regional plan covers all EEA countries, so you don't need to change plans when crossing borders within the EU. Coverage in multiple European countries is generally good, but there are areas where you would be blind without a well-configured local eSIM.

Data coverage in Europe: what you can expect

Coverage in Europe varies considerably depending on the area. In major urban and tourist areas (multiple European countries), you will find 4G and in some cases 5G networks. The experience is comparable to what you would have at home.

However, as in any destination, there are areas where the signal is more limited:

  • Major cities: stable 4G/5G, perfect for streaming, browsing, and video calls.
  • Rural and nature areas: coverage may drop to 3G or even lose signal in remote spots.
  • Transportation: trains, ferries, and intercity buses have variable coverage; in cities generally good.

Key tip: don't confuse network coverage with plan coverage. Just because there's good 4G signal in an area doesn't mean your specific eSIM includes that country; always check the list before you leave.

To maximize coverage in Europe, PuraSim uses the local networks with the best available infrastructure through local roaming agreements. This means your eSIM automatically connects to the network with the best signal at all times.

How many GB do you need to travel to Europe?

This is the million-dollar question. The short answer: 30-40 GB for 30 days. The long answer depends on how you use your phone during the trip.

Here's a guide to actual consumption by type of daily use:

  • Basic use (maps, messages, occasional queries): 300-500 MB/day
  • Moderate use (social media, photos, continuous browsing): 800 MB-1.5 GB/day
  • Intensive use (remote work, streaming, video calls): 2-4 GB/day

For a trip to Europe lasting 30 days, our recommendation is to contract 30-40 GB for 30 days. This is enough for most travelers with normal use: Google Maps running constantly, Instagram, WhatsApp, and some occasional searches.

If you are going to work remotely or plan to make frequent video calls, upgrade to the next plan. PuraSim plans allow you to top up data if you run out, so it's not a problem if you fall short: you won't suddenly lose coverage.

How to activate your eSIM for Europe step by step

Activating a PuraSim eSIM is as simple as scanning a QR code. There's no need to go to a store, no need to wait for any delivery. The entire process takes less than 5 minutes:

  1. Buy your plan at purasim.com for Europe. You will receive an email with the QR code.
  2. Install the eSIM: go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add Data Plan (on iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (on Android).
  3. Scan the QR code or manually enter the activation data.
  4. Set up mobile data: make sure to select the PuraSim eSIM as the default data line.
  5. Activate data roaming in the PuraSim eSIM settings (necessary for it to work on local networks).

You can install the eSIM before leaving home and configure it to activate automatically when you arrive in Europe, or activate it manually when you land.

Important: verify that your phone is eSIM compatible before purchasing. Most iPhones from XS, Samsung Galaxy from S20, and Google Pixel from 3 are compatible. Check the complete list at purasim.com.

Local connectivity tips for Europe

Beyond getting the right eSIM, there are some tricks that make a difference in staying connected throughout your trip to Europe:

  • Download offline maps before you leave. Google Maps and Maps.me allow you to download maps of all of Europe or specific cities. This way, you can navigate without using data when you are in areas with a weak signal.
  • Use airplane mode strategically. On long flights, trains, or ferries, activating airplane mode preserves battery and data. Connect to available Wi-Fi if there is any.
  • WhatsApp and Telegram over data. Calls through these apps consume much less than an international call. Configure them for high-quality calls only when you are on Wi-Fi.
  • Share connection with caution. Hotspot consumes data quickly, especially if there are other connected devices (laptop, tablet). Use it only when necessary.

And the most important tip: a European regional plan covers all EEA countries; you don't need to change plans when crossing borders within the EU.

With these tricks and a good data plan from PuraSim, your trip to Europe will have the connectivity you need without unnecessary expenses.

Myths about eSIM in Europe (and what almost no one tells you)

Before buying, it's good to clarify a few things that are taken for granted and are not always true. These are precisely what make the difference between arriving calmly and having a problem halfway through your trip.

Myth: "all European plans cover the same countries." This is not true. A plan designed for the core of the European Union is not the same as one designed for a route that goes beyond it. This is the difference between the options PuraSim handles for Europe:

Plan Scope When to choose it
eSIM Europe Base plan designed for the core Eurozone countries Short trip or focused on two or three countries in the center of the EU
eSIM Europe 30 countries Expanded coverage to 30 European countries Long interrail-type trip with several stops
eSIM Europe 33 countries Expanded coverage to 33 European countries Route that leaves the EU core towards the east or the Balkans
eSIM Spain Coverage only in Spain If your return home includes a long stay only in Spain and you want to use data there

Before paying, check the description of each plan and review the exact list of countries: it's the only way to know if your complete route is covered. If your itinerary jumps outside the usual area — for example, from Italy to the UK, or from Croatia to a non-EU Balkan country — confirm it before assuming the base plan covers it: it's the difference between arriving calmly and running out of data halfway through your trip.

Myth: "my Spanish operator already covers me throughout Europe, I don't need anything else." Partially true. If your line is from an EU operator and your trip stays within the Union, the "roam like at home" data roaming regulation allows you to use your national rate at domestic prices. For a three-day trip to Lisbon or Paris, that's probably enough: don't buy anything. The problem comes on a month-long trip. Almost all operators apply a reasonable usage limit for roaming that is much tighter than your home data allowance, and that limit runs out before the trip ends. Furthermore, as soon as you leave the EU — the UK, Switzerland, a good part of the Balkans, Turkey — the included roaming disappears and you return to your operator's international rates. That's where a local eSIM stops being a luxury and starts to really pay off.

One detail that almost everyone misses: as soon as you land and the eSIM connects to the network, your phone will take the opportunity to launch photo backups, pending app updates, and accumulated email synchronization in the background. That's easily one or two GB gone before you've even left the baggage claim area. Disable automatic photo uploads on mobile data (leave it only for WiFi) and pause automatic updates before leaving home.

Another surprising one: there are stretches where you won't have coverage, no matter what plan you have. The Eurostar tunnel between France and the UK, a good part of the ferries between the Balearic Islands or Corsica and the mainland, and some mountain sections on high-speed trains in the Alps lose signal, even if only for a short while. Download music, offline maps, and PDF tickets beforehand; don't assume you'll be able to use your phone exactly at that moment.

And the myth that loses the most money: thinking that the more GB you buy, the better you sleep. That's not true. Calculate your actual consumption with the guide above, choose the plan that fits, and use the top-up if you run short halfway through your trip. Paying extra for a giant plan you won't deplete doesn't give you more speed or better coverage, it just empties your wallet.

One more warning, related to connectivity: at airports, stations, and accommodations, you will have public Wi-Fi everywhere. It's convenient for saving data, but it carries risks if you connect to banking or personal accounts from an open network. With your own eSIM data, you avoid that entire problem; if you still plan to use public Wi-Fi, it's advisable to use an active VPN.

Frequently asked questions

When should I activate the eSIM for Europe?

You can install it on your phone before leaving home. Most PuraSim eSIMs for Europe can be set up days in advance and activated automatically upon arrival at your destination, or manually whenever you want to start using it.

Is my phone compatible with the eSIM for Europe?

Most smartphones manufactured since 2018-2019 are compatible: iPhone XS onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards, and many more. Check in Settings → General → About that your device lists 'eSIM' among its options.

Can I keep my usual phone number while using the eSIM in Europe?

Yes. The eSIM works in a separate slot from your physical SIM. You can configure your local SIM for calls and the PuraSim eSIM for data. You will continue to receive calls and SMS on your usual number.

What happens if I run out of data in Europe?

You don't suddenly lose coverage. You can buy a data top-up directly from the PuraSim app or customer panel. The top-up is applied within minutes and you don't need to change plans or buy a new eSIM.

Does the PuraSim eSIM work all over Europe?

The eSIM works through the local networks available in Europe. In major cities and tourist areas, coverage is excellent (4G/5G). In rural or remote areas, the signal may be more limited, even if the regional plan covers all EEA countries. We recommend downloading offline maps for those areas.

Do I need an eSIM if my Spanish operator already includes roaming in the European Union?

It depends on how long and how far you go. If your line is from an EU operator and your trip stays within the Union, the roaming regulations already allow you to use your national rate at domestic prices, and for a short getaway, that might be enough. The problem arises on long trips: almost all operators apply a reasonable usage limit for roaming that is much tighter than your home data allowance, and that limit runs out before the end of the month. Furthermore, as soon as you leave the EU (United Kingdom, Switzerland, a good part of the Balkans, Turkey), the included roaming no longer applies, and you return to your operator's international rates.

Which countries might not be included in an eSIM plan for Europe?

Not all "Europe" plans cover the same list of countries, so don't take it for granted. The countries most often excluded from the base plan or requiring a broader one are the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Turkey, and some non-EU Balkan countries such as Albania, Bosnia, or Serbia. Before purchasing, check the coverage list of each plan and compare it with your complete itinerary, not just your first stop.
