eSIM for Finland — Helsinki, Lapland, and the Land of a Thousand Lakes

In short: For Finland, a Finland eSIM gives you 4G/5G data as soon as you land at Helsinki-Vantaa, without expensive roaming or physical stores. If your Spanish plan already includes EU roaming and the trip is short, you might not need to buy one — we explain when you do and don't below. For a typical 10-day trip through Helsinki, Tampere, and Rovaniemi, the general recommendation is 6-8 GB. View plans →

Traveling to Finland is an incredible experience, but arriving without data can ruin the first moments: no Google Maps to get out of the airport, no way to look for the hotel, no way to contact whoever is waiting for you. The solution is simple and has been the standard among experienced travelers for years: an eSIM for Finland.

In this guide, we tell you everything you need to know before traveling to Finland: what coverage to expect in Helsinki, Tampere, and Rovaniemi, how many GB you really need, how to activate the eSIM, and the best connectivity tips from those who have already traveled there.

Spoiler: with PuraSim, you have local data from the moment the plane lands, without contracts, without a physical SIM, and without surprises on your bill.

Why do you need an eSIM to travel to Finland?

International roaming from European and Latin American operators can cost you between 10 and 30 euros or dollars per day in Finland. A local eSIM gives you data at local prices, without absurd daily limits and with 4G or 5G speeds where the network allows it.

The difference between going with roaming and with a PuraSim eSIM is huge:

  • Traditional roaming: fixed daily rate even if you barely use data, speed often limited to 3G, surprise bills upon return.
  • PuraSim eSIM for Finland: you only pay for what you contract, full local data at maximum available speed, activation in 5 minutes from anywhere.

In addition, with an eSIM, you can keep your original phone number active to receive calls and SMS, as the eSIM operates in a separate virtual slot. You don't have to choose between local connectivity and your usual number.

In Finland, 4G coverage is excellent in major cities and along the entire coast, but it drops significantly in remote areas like Oulanka National Park, where the signal can be weak or nonexistent. Stable data is especially important there. Coverage in Helsinki, Tampere, and Rovaniemi is generally good, but there are areas where without a properly configured local eSIM, you would be in the dark.

Finland eSIM vs your usual plan: when to buy it and when not to

This is where most guides don't commit, so let's do it. Finland is an EU country, and for years, the data roaming ("roam like at home") regulation has required European operators to allow you to use your usual data allowance in any EU country at the same price as at home. If you are traveling with a Spanish plan from one of the major operators and your monthly allowance has plenty of room, for a short trip to Helsinki, you may not need to buy anything: your own card already works just like in Spain.

That said, there are very specific situations where a local eSIM does make a difference:

Traveler profile Do you need an eSIM? Why
Short trip to Helsinki with a Spanish plan that includes EU roaming Probably not European regulations already cover you at national prices
Long trip (more than 2 weeks) to Finland Yes You avoid running out of your monthly allowance, which you also need when you return home
Traveler from outside the EU (Latin America, United Kingdom, USA) Yes Roaming outside the EU becomes very expensive with most operators
Remote work, streaming, or constant video calls in Lapland Yes You need extra data margin without relying on the accommodation's Wi-Fi
Route through several countries on the same trip (Finland + Estonia, Sweden...) Depends A regional eSIM covers several countries without changing plans

For that last case, if your itinerary doesn't just stay in Finland, check out the Europe eSIM, which covers several countries with a single plan.

What is true for all profiles: even if your operator covers you within the EU, buying a local eSIM gives you an extra layer of peace of mind — you don't touch the allowance you need for when you return home, and if something goes wrong with your usual operator (it happens more often than it seems), you have an active backup plan in your pocket.

Data coverage in Finland: what you can expect

Coverage in Finland varies considerably depending on the area. In major urban and tourist areas (Helsinki, Tampere, and Rovaniemi), you will find 4G and in some cases 5G networks. The experience is comparable to what you would have at home.

However, as in any destination, there are areas where the signal is more limited:

  • Major cities: stable 4G/5G, perfect for streaming, browsing, and video calls.
  • Rural areas and nature: coverage can drop to 3G or even lose signal in remote areas.
  • Transport: trains, ferries, and intercity buses have variable coverage; generally good in cities.

Key tip: expect a good signal on the coast and in cities, but lower your expectations when you go into national parks like Oulanka.

To maximize coverage in Finland, PuraSim uses the local networks with the best available infrastructure through local roaming agreements. This means that your eSIM automatically connects to the network with the best signal at all times.

How many GB do you need for a trip to Finland?

This is the million-dollar question. The short answer: 6-8 GB for 10 days. The long answer depends on how you use your phone during the trip.

Here is a guide to actual consumption by type of daily use:

  • Basic use (maps, messages, occasional queries): 300-500 MB/day
  • Moderate use (social media, photos, continuous browsing): 800 MB-1.5 GB/day
  • Intensive use (remote work, streaming, video calls): 2-4 GB/day

For a 10-day trip to Finland, our recommendation is to contract 6-8 GB for 10 days. This is enough for most travelers with normal use: Google Maps running constantly, Instagram, WhatsApp, and occasional searches.

If you are going to work remotely or plan to make frequent video calls, upgrade to the next plan immediately. PuraSim plans allow you to top up data if you run out, so it's not a big deal if you run short: you won't suddenly lose coverage.

How to activate your eSIM for Finland step-by-step

Activating a PuraSim eSIM is as simple as scanning a QR code. There's no need to go to a store, no need to wait for any shipment. The entire process takes less than 5 minutes:

  1. Buy your plan on purasim.com for Finland. You will receive an email with the QR code.
  2. Install the eSIM: go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add Data Plan (on iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (on Android).
  3. Scan the QR code or manually enter the activation details.
  4. Configure mobile data: make sure to select the PuraSim eSIM as the default data line.
  5. Activate data roaming in the PuraSim eSIM settings (necessary for it to work on local networks).

You can install the eSIM before leaving home and set it to activate automatically when you arrive in Finland, or activate it manually when you land.

Important: verify that your phone is eSIM compatible before purchasing. Most iPhones from XS onwards, Samsung Galaxy from S20 onwards, and Google Pixel from 3 onwards are compatible. Check the full list on purasim.com.

Local connectivity tips for Finland

Beyond getting the right eSIM, there are some tricks that make a difference in keeping you connected throughout your trip to Finland:

  • Download offline maps before leaving. Google Maps and Maps.me allow you to download maps of all of Finland or specific cities. This way you can navigate without spending data when you are in areas with a weak signal.
  • Use airplane mode strategically. On long flights, trains, or ferries, activating airplane mode preserves battery and data. Connect to available WiFi if there is any.
  • WhatsApp and Telegram over data. Calls through these apps consume much less than an international call. Configure them for high-quality calls only when you are on WiFi.
  • Share connection with care. Hotspot consumes data quickly, especially if there are other devices connected (laptop, tablet). Use it only when necessary.

And the most important tip: don't assume you'll have coverage throughout the country just because you had it in Helsinki. The Finnish network is excellent in cities and on the coast, but it weakens quickly as you leave urban centers for natural areas.

With these tricks and a good data plan from PuraSim, your trip to Finland will have the connectivity you need without unnecessary expenses.

Myths and what almost no one tells you about connectivity in Finland

After so many generic articles repeating that "coverage is usually good in cities," let's talk about what you'll really find there.

  • The cold drains the battery, not the eSIM. In Lapland, with sub-zero temperatures for much of the year, phones lose battery life much faster due to the cold than to data consumption. If you're chasing the northern lights outside Rovaniemi or Inari, keep your phone in an inner pocket close to your body and a charged power bank: you'll run out of battery long before you run out of data.
  • Free Wi-Fi in Finland is among the best you'll find. VR trains (the Finnish railway network), public libraries, and Helsinki-Vantaa airport all have free and stable Wi-Fi. There's no need to spend data on the train journey from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, for example: use the train's Wi-Fi and save your mobile data for when you get off.
  • Public Wi-Fi is not synonymous with secure Wi-Fi. Just because it's free and works well doesn't mean it's private. If you're going to check your bank or handle sensitive matters using café or train Wi-Fi, use a VPN: here's a specific guide on how to protect your privacy with a VPN while traveling.
  • An eSIM does not provide worse signal than a physical SIM. This is a fairly common myth. The eSIM uses the same antenna and modem as the phone; only where the operator profile is stored changes. The coverage you have depends on the network you connect to, not the type of SIM.
  • In Oulanka National Park and much of deep Lapland, the signal disappears completely, it doesn't just slow down. If you're going on a long hike or chasing auroras far from urban centers, download the offline map before you leave and tell someone your approximate route: no eSIM in the world will give you coverage where there's no antenna.
  • You don't need to activate the eSIM on the same day you land. You can install it and get it ready days in advance from home, with Wi-Fi, and activate the data just upon landing. This way, you avoid fumbling with your phone right after getting off the plane and with jet lag.

If you want to get the most out of every GB contracted, not only in Finland but on any trip, we have a guide with tips for saving data with an eSIM that complements all of this well.

Frequently asked questions

When should I activate the eSIM for Finland?

You can install it on your phone before leaving home. Most PuraSim eSIMs for Finland can be set up days in advance and activated automatically upon arrival at your destination, or manually whenever you want to start using them.

Is my phone compatible with the eSIM for Finland?

Most smartphones manufactured since 2018-2019 are compatible: iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many more. Check in Settings → General → About that your device lists 'eSIM' among its options.

Can I keep my usual phone number while using the eSIM in Finland?

Yes. The eSIM works in a separate slot from your physical SIM. You can set up your local SIM for calls and the PuraSim eSIM for data. You will continue to receive calls and SMS on your usual number.

What happens if I run out of data in Finland?

You won't suddenly lose coverage. You can purchase a data top-up directly from the PuraSim app or customer panel. The top-up is applied within minutes, and you don't need to change your plan or buy a new eSIM.

Does the PuraSim eSIM work throughout Finland?

The eSIM works through the local networks available in Finland. In major cities and tourist areas, coverage is excellent (4G/5G). In rural or remote areas, such as inland Lapland, the signal may be more limited. We recommend downloading offline maps for those areas.

Do I need an eSIM in Finland if my Spanish plan already includes EU roaming?

Not always. If your Spanish operator includes free roaming in the European Union and your data allowance has enough room for the trip, your own SIM card will work in Finland at the same price as at home. An eSIM makes more sense if the trip is long, you want to avoid using up your monthly allowance, you're traveling from outside the EU, or you need extra data for remote work.

Is there coverage to see the Northern Lights in Lapland?

In urban centers like Rovaniemi or Inari, 4G coverage is usually good. As you move away to aurora observation areas or national parks like Oulanka, the signal can disappear completely. Download offline maps and aurora forecasts before leaving the urban center.
