eSIM installed but no data — Causes and solutions

eSIM instalada pero sin datos — Causas y soluciones

You have the eSIM installed, the profile appears as active, but you still can't load anything online. The problem isn't the eSIM itself: it's almost always a missing setting or a feature we forgot to activate. In this guide, we'll go over the most common causes and how to solve them in under ten minutes.

Why is your eSIM not providing data even though it's installed?

Installing an eSIM correctly and having a data connection are two different things. The profile can be downloaded and activated without errors, but the internet connection depends on several additional factors that the device does not automatically configure in all cases.

The most frequent causes are:

  • Incorrect or unconfigured APN: The Access Point Name (APN) is the gateway that connects your mobile to the operator's data network. Without the correct APN, the phone doesn't know where to route traffic.
  • Roaming data disabled: If your eSIM operates in roaming mode—as is the case with most travel eSIMs—your device's roaming setting must be turned on.
  • eSIM not set as data line: On dual SIM phones, the default data line may still be the physical SIM.
  • Problem with the operator's activation process: Although rare, sometimes the profile is downloaded but the operator doesn't finish activating it in their system.
  • Airplane mode active or connectivity bug: A residual airplane mode state can block the connection even with the eSIM active.

The good news is that 90% of these cases can be resolved by following the steps below, without needing to contact support.

Verify APN settings

The APN is the first place you should look. Many eSIM providers automatically configure the APN when installing the profile, but on some devices—especially Android—you have to enter it manually.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Network.
  2. Select the travel eSIM if you have dual SIM.
  3. In the APN field under "Mobile Data," enter the value provided by your provider.
  4. Close the settings and wait 15 seconds.

On Android

  1. Go to Settings → Connections (or Network) → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names (APN).
  2. If the eSIM has not automatically created an APN, tap the "+" button to add a new one.
  3. Enter the name, APN, username, and password according to your provider's instructions.
  4. Save and select the newly created APN.

If you can't find your operator's APN, look for it in the confirmation email you received when purchasing the eSIM or in the support section of their website.

Activate data roaming

This is the most common error and also the easiest to solve. Many travelers install the eSIM correctly but forget that the operating system has a roaming charge protection that is disabled by default.

On iPhone

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data.
  2. Select the eSIM line.
  3. Activate "Data Roaming".

On Android

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks.
  2. Select the SIM corresponding to your eSIM.
  3. Activate "Data Roaming".

Important: If your eSIM is from a local operator in the country you are in (for example, you bought a Japanese eSIM to use in Japan), you do not need to activate roaming. This setting is only necessary when the eSIM operates on foreign networks.

Reset network

Sometimes the device remains in an inconsistent state: it detects the network but fails to establish a data connection. These are the steps to force a clean reconnection:

Airplane mode

Activate airplane mode, wait 30 seconds, and then deactivate it. This forces the mobile to search for a network from scratch. It's the quickest method and works surprisingly well.

Complete restart

Turn off the phone completely (not just a quick restart) and turn it back on. On some models, this releases blocked processes that were preventing the connection.

Reset network settings (last resort)

If the above doesn't work, you can reset the device's network settings:

  • iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
  • Android: Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings.

Note: this will delete saved Wi-Fi networks and manually configured APNs. You will have to re-enter them.

When the problem is with the operator

If you have checked the APN, activated roaming, restarted the device, and the eSIM still doesn't provide data, the problem may be on the operator's side. This occurs in these scenarios:

  • Pending activation: Some operators need up to 24 hours to activate the profile in their system, even if the download was instantaneous.
  • Data plan exhausted or expired: Check in the provider's app or website that your data allowance is still valid.
  • Insufficient coverage: Although rare, you may be in an area without coverage from the operator associated with your eSIM. Check the coverage map.
  • Network restriction: In some countries, the network your eSIM connects to may be congested or have time restrictions.

In any of these cases, the solution involves contacting the provider's support. Most offer real-time chat and can verify the status of your profile in seconds. For a comparison of providers based on their support quality, see our guide on common eSIM problems.

Definitive solution

If you want to avoid these kinds of problems on future trips, the key is to choose the right provider from the start. Not all eSIMs are created equal: some configure the APN automatically, others have 24/7 support, and some include coverage in more than 150 countries with a single purchase.

These are the criteria we recommend for choosing a reliable eSIM:

  1. Automatic APN configuration: The provider should handle this without you having to do anything.
  2. Support in English and available before your trip: Essential if a problem arises upon arrival.
  3. Verified compatibility with your device: Check the list of compatible models before purchasing.
  4. Recent user reviews: Prioritize providers with updated ratings, not from two years ago.

And if the problem you're experiencing is that the eSIM simply doesn't connect when you arrive abroad — not just a lack of data, but an inability to register on the network — also check out our specific guide on eSIM not connecting abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my eSIM say it's active but I have no internet connection?
Most commonly, the APN is not configured correctly or roaming data is disabled in your phone settings. Check both before contacting the operator.
Do I need to activate roaming even if I'm traveling with a local eSIM from the country?
It depends. If the eSIM is from a local operator in the country you are in, you do not need roaming. But if it is an international eSIM that operates on roaming, you must activate it in your device settings.
How do I know the correct APN for my eSIM?
Your eSIM provider should provide you with the APN in the confirmation email or on their support website. If you can't find it, contact their customer service.
Does restarting the phone solve the problem of an eSIM without data?
Sometimes, yes. A complete restart forces the device to reconnect to the operator's network. You can also try activating and deactivating airplane mode for 30 seconds.
What if none of the solutions work?
Contact your eSIM provider's support directly. They can verify from their end if the profile is correctly activated and if there is coverage in your area.
