eSIM para Estambul: cobertura, aeropuerto y cuántos GB llevar

If you're taking a trip to Istanbul and don't want to overpay or rely on hotel Wi-Fi, an eSIM for Istanbul gives you data as soon as you land. In this guide, I'll tell you about the coverage you'll find in the city, what to do as soon as you step off the plane, and how many GB you should get for a weekend or a long week between the Bosphorus and the Grand Bazaar.

Does an eSIM work in Istanbul?

Yes. Istanbul has excellent mobile coverage, and travel eSIMs connect to local networks without you having to do anything special. You buy the plan before you leave, install it on your phone while still at home, and when you arrive, you just activate the data.

The eSIM works on the same Turkish operators that a resident would use, so in practice, you browse just like a local: maps, translator, WhatsApp to message your loved ones, and last-minute reservations. All you need is an eSIM-compatible phone (almost all iPhones since the XS and most mid-to-high-end Androids are) and for it to be unlocked. No need to look for a physical store when you land or fill out forms in Turkish. If you're unsure whether your phone supports it, check our guide to eSIM-compatible phones before buying.

Coverage by city area

In the tourist area, the signal is more than solid. These are the areas where you'll use it most:

  • Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern): Stable 4G/5G even with crowds.
  • Beyoğlu and Taksim: Big city coverage, good for uploading stories on the go.
  • Kadıköy and the Asian side: If you cross by ferry, the signal holds up for almost the entire journey across the Bosphorus.
  • Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar: Being covered, the signal drops a bit inside the aisles, but recovers when you exit.

The only place where you'll notice cuts is in some sections of the metro and the Marmaray (the tunnel under the strait), which is normal in any metro in the world. Download offline maps of Istanbul and you're all set.

Traveler's tip: activate the eSIM and do a speed test as soon as you leave the terminal. If it's good there, it'll be good throughout the city.

What to do at the airport (IST and SAW)

Istanbul has two airports: IST (Istanbul Airport) on the European side, huge and modern, and SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) on the Asian side, widely used by low-cost flights. At both, the process is the same and there's no need to queue at any phone counter.

The ideal is to install the eSIM at home with your Wi-Fi, before flying. When you land, you just need to: activate your phone, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line (yes, although it may seem contradictory, the travel eSIM needs it to connect to the local network), and wait a few seconds for the Turkish operator to appear. As soon as you see the signal, you can order a taxi, open Google Maps to your hotel, or announce that you've arrived. If you prefer to wait and buy it upon landing, the airport itself has free Wi-Fi to download it on the spot, although it's more convenient to have it done beforehand.

How many GB to get for your trip

It depends on how much you use your phone and how many days you stay. For normal traveler use (maps, messaging, social media, some browsing, and uploading photos to the cloud), this table serves as a guide:

Days in Istanbul Light usage Medium usage (maps + social media) High usage (video, stories)
Weekend (3 days) 1 GB 3 GB 5 GB
5 days 2 GB 5 GB 8 GB
1 week 3 GB 7 GB 10 GB or more

My recommendation: for a weekend getaway, 3 GB is usually enough, especially if you connect to the hotel Wi-Fi at night to download photos and watch shows. If you're going to use a lot of video, constant browsing, or share internet with another device, go up to 5 GB and travel with peace of mind. You can always top up if you run out.

Istanbul is not the same as "all of Turkey"

There's an important nuance here. Searching for "Istanbul eSIM" is natural, but there are no plans just for the city: what you buy is a Turkey eSIM that, obviously, works in Istanbul and throughout the country. This works in your favor.

If your trip combines Istanbul with Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale, or the Antalya coast, the same plan covers you without changing anything. And if the trip is longer or you want more leeway, you'll be interested in a plan with more days. For two-week itineraries across the country, we have a specific guide for 2-week Turkey eSIMs, and if you want the complete overview of coverage and operators, the general guide for travelers in Turkey. The advantage over activating your company's roaming is clear: you pay a fixed rate and know in advance what you're spending, with no surprises on your bill when you return.

How to activate it step by step

The process is standard and takes less than a minute once you have the plan:

  1. Buy the Turkey eSIM with the GB you've chosen.
  2. Install it by scanning the QR you receive by email, or directly without a QR on recent iPhones.
  3. Set it up at home, with Wi-Fi, before flying.
  4. Upon arrival in Istanbul, activate data roaming for the eSIM line.
  5. Wait a few seconds for the Turkish operator to connect and you're done.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use my Spanish number in Istanbul?

Yes. The eSIM is a second line for data only, so your regular SIM remains in your phone to receive calls or SMS from your bank. Simply assign mobile data to the travel eSIM and calls to your usual line. For voice calls, use WhatsApp or similar over the eSIM data.

How many GB do I need for a weekend in Istanbul?

For three days of medium use (maps, WhatsApp, social media, and uploading photos to the cloud), 3 GB is more than enough. If you use a lot of video or share internet with another device, get 5 GB. Taking advantage of hotel Wi-Fi at night significantly extends data consumption.

Does the Turkey eSIM work on the Asian side of the city?

Yes, without any change. Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia, but it's the same Turkish mobile network on both sides. Whether you cross by ferry or bridge, the signal follows you. You'll only notice occasional cuts inside the Marmaray tunnel under the Bosphorus.

Do I need to activate roaming for it to work?

You need to activate "data roaming" but only for the travel eSIM line, not your Spanish line. It sounds strange, but that's what allows the eSIM to connect to the local Turkish network. You won't be charged roaming fees: the plan is already paid for at a fixed rate.

When should I install the eSIM, before or upon arrival?

Install it at home with Wi-Fi, before flying. That way, when you land, you just need to turn on data and you're already connected. Installation requires a connection, and although Istanbul airports have free Wi-Fi, it's more convenient to arrive with everything ready and not depend on anything.

Conclusion

Istanbul has plenty of coverage, and an eSIM saves you queues, expensive roaming, and reliance on Wi-Fi. Choose your GB according to your days, install it at home, and activate it when you land. With a Turkey eSIM, you'll be connected from the first minute and enjoy the city without worrying about the bill. Check out the plans and choose the one that fits your trip.
