Qué es una eSIM y por qué cambiarán para siempre cómo viajas

If you’ve ever traveled abroad and been hit with an unexpected data bill, you already know why more and more travelers are switching to eSIMs. But what exactly is an eSIM and how does it work?

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card integrated directly into your smartphone's hardware. Unlike physical SIMs that you have to buy, insert, and swap, the eSIM is configured digitally: no plastic, no slot, just a QR code you scan and you're good to go.

eSIM technology was standardized by the GSMA and has been present in most modern smartphones since approximately 2018-2019.

How does an eSIM work?

The process is simple:

  1. Purchase your data plan online (before you travel).
  2. Receive a QR code by email — in minutes, no waiting.
  3. Scan the QR code in your phone settings (with WiFi).
  4. Upon arrival at your destination, the local network connects automatically.

The entire process takes less than 5 minutes. No need to visit a store, no need to give details at a foreign airport, no need to wait for something to be sent to you by mail.

eSIM vs. physical SIM: key differences

The main difference is the medium: a physical SIM is a plastic card with a chip. An eSIM is that same chip, but soldered inside the phone. Functionally, they are equivalent — they connect your phone to a mobile network. The difference lies in convenience:

  • No need to physically change your SIM to use local data at your destination.
  • Your physical SIM (with your usual number) remains active in parallel — you still receive calls and SMS.
  • You can have multiple eSIM profiles stored and switch between them without manipulating the hardware.

Is my phone eSIM compatible?

Most smartphones released since 2018 are eSIM compatible. Some of the most popular include:

  • iPhone: from iPhone XS (2018). The iPhone 14 in the US only has eSIM, with no physical slot.
  • Samsung Galaxy: from S20 in most markets. S21, S22, S23, S24, Z Fold, Z Flip.
  • Google Pixel: from Pixel 3 (2018).
  • Motorola, Oppo, Xiaomi: selected models from 2020-2021.

To confirm if your device is compatible, go to Settings → General → About → eSIM availability (iOS) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android).

How many eSIMs can I have active?

It depends on the device. Most smartphones allow you to store up to 5-10 eSIMs but only activate 1 or 2 at a time. You can have your local number on your physical SIM and the destination data eSIM active at the same time.

Is eSIM secure?

Yes. eSIM uses the same security standards as physical SIMs, with additional layers of encryption because it is a digital process. eSIM profiles are loaded encrypted directly from the operator.

Why use a PuraSim eSIM for travel?
