How to activate an eSIM on your phone

It activates in three steps: connect your phone to WiFi, scan the QR code (or enter the manual code) from Settings > Mobile Data, and wait for the profile to download and install. If your phone is compatible and you have a good WiFi signal, the entire process takes about a minute.

The order matters more than it seems. Most activation problems are not due to a broken phone or a faulty eSIM: they are a skipped step or one done in the wrong order. Below are the complete steps, and further down, what to do if something doesn't add up.

What you need on hand before starting

Before touching Settings, gather these items so you don't have to go back and forth:

  • Stable WiFi connection. The eSIM profile is downloaded via the internet, not through the cellular network. Without WiFi (or data from another active line), the installation won't proceed.
  • The QR code or manual code. This usually arrives by email after purchase. If you're going to scan it from the same phone where it will be installed, first save it to your gallery or open it on another device.
  • Factory unlocked phone. A phone locked to an operator may reject the profile even if the hardware is compatible.
  • Sufficient battery charge. Some operating systems block profile installations when the battery is very low.

If you're changing phones and want to transfer your current eSIM to a new one, that process is different from a new activation: we cover it separately in how to move your eSIM to another phone.

Step 1: Confirm your phone supports eSIM

Not all phones have the technology, and some that do have it blocked depending on the country where they were purchased (this is a typical problem with certain models sold in the US with the eSIM chip disabled by the original carrier). Before attempting anything, check in Settings if the option "Add eSIM" or "Add Data Plan" exists. If it doesn't appear, your phone probably doesn't support it or has it blocked.

The complete list of compatible models, by brand and year, is available at eSIM compatible phones. It's worth checking before buying any eSIM, not after.

Step 2: Download the profile (QR code or manual)

There are two ways to install the profile, and both achieve the same result. The difference lies in how convenient each one is depending on the device you use for scanning.

Method What you need When it's convenient Point to watch out for
QR Code Another device (or the same phone) to display the code image When you have two screens available: one to display the QR and another to scan The QR code can only be scanned once; if you've already used it, it won't work again
Manual code (SM-DP+ and activation code) The two alphanumeric codes that come with the QR When installing from the same phone that receives the email, or if the QR doesn't scan well You must copy the codes without spaces or line breaks; a typing error will cause it to be rejected

On Android, the usual path is Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager > Add eSIM. On iPhone, it's Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Use QR Code (or "Enter Details Manually" if you choose the second method). The system will ask if you want to scan now or do it with another device's camera: either path ends with the same installed profile.

If you have never installed an eSIM and want the step-by-step guide with screenshots by phone brand, it is fully detailed in how to install an eSIM.

Step 3: Activate the data plan

This is where most people get stuck without realizing it. Installing the profile is not the same as activating it: the phone can show the eSIM in the list of lines without it actually transmitting data.

After the profile finishes installing, check two things in Settings:

  1. That the line is "Activated" (not just "Installed"). On iPhone, go to Settings > Mobile Data and confirm that the eSIM switch is green. On Android, the line should appear marked as enabled within the SIM manager.
  2. That the data itinerary is assigned to the eSIM. If your phone has two lines (your usual physical SIM plus the new eSIM), the system doesn't always automatically switch the data line. You have to go to Mobile Data and manually choose which of the two lines is used for browsing.
If the phone allows you to install the profile without any error but you can't browse when you arrive at your destination, it's almost never a problem with the phone or the eSIM: it's because the mobile data line is still pointing to the physical SIM, not the newly installed eSIM.

That is, in fact, the detail that most confuses those activating an eSIM for the first time with a dual active line: the eSIM icon appears as "active" in the list, the signal bar looks normal, and yet data doesn't load a page. The cause is almost always that manual data line selection which remained on the old physical SIM. Going into Settings and changing it manually solves the problem in seconds, without reinstalling anything.

Can I activate it myself, without going to a store?

Yes. An eSIM does not require a physical card to be handed to you over a counter: the entire process, from purchase until the phone is browsing, is done from the device itself. You don't need to go to a store, stand in line, or present identification at a physical location.

The only thing that replaces "going to the store" is having WiFi and following the order of the three steps above. If something doesn't progress, the problem is almost never that you "lack in-person help": it's one of the technical points we review in the next section.

"Could not activate": most probable causes and solutions

When activation fails, it's not random. There's a fairly predictable sequence of causes, from most common to least common. Review them in this order before assuming the eSIM is damaged.

Cause (most to least probable) How to tell What to do
No WiFi or unstable WiFi during download Installation bar gets stuck halfway or error says "could not complete" Switch to another WiFi network (avoid hotel or airport networks with login portals) and try again
QR code already scanned before Immediate error message when scanning, without even starting the download Use the manual code (SM-DP+ and activation code) instead of the QR
Data line pointing to the wrong SIM Profile installed, but no internet Settings > Mobile Data > select the eSIM as the primary data line
Data roaming off Signal available and eSIM active, but nothing loads outside your country Activate "Data Roaming" or "Roaming Data" within the settings for that line
Phone locked to an operator or with eSIM disabled from factory "Add eSIM" option doesn't even appear in Settings Confirm the lock with the manufacturer; if locked, there is no software solution
Activation deadline expired Code or QR returns "invalid profile" or "expired" error Check how long you had from purchase to activate; if expired, you need a new profile

If after reviewing this list it still doesn't work, the extended list of errors by exact message (with screenshots) is available in common problems when activating an eSIM.

eSIM vs. physical SIM: what changes during activation

If you're used to activating a physical SIM, the logic is different in two specific points: there's no card to insert, and you don't have to wait to "get coverage" for the process to begin, because installation depends on WiFi, not the cellular network.

Physical SIM eSIM
What you need to activate it Insert the card and wait for cellular coverage WiFi to download the profile
Where to get it Physical store or operator's office Purchased and received by email, without traveling
What happens if you lose it You have to go physically replace it The profile remains on the phone; the risk is losing the device, not the card
Dual line on the same phone Requires a physical dual SIM tray Coexists with your usual physical SIM without an additional tray, if the phone allows it

The complete comparison, including what is best depending on the type of trip, is in eSIM vs. physical SIM.

When is it best to activate: before traveling or upon landing?

Here's a nuance that almost no one explains well: installing the profile and activating the data line are two distinct moments, and they don't have to happen on the same day.

You can calmly install the eSIM profile from home, using your usual WiFi, days before your trip. This doesn't consume your data plan or start any usage period. What you should save for when you land is activating the data line and roaming, so you don't start your plan's countdown while you're still at home.

This is especially important if you purchased in advance: there's a 180-day window to activate the eSIM from the date of purchase, so there's no rush to install it the same day you acquire it. You can have it ready weeks in advance and only turn on data upon landing.

For the rest of the activation itinerary according to the type of trip (multiple countries, long layovers, business trips), the complete guide is in how to use an eSIM when traveling.

If the problem is with the provider, not the phone

After checking compatibility, WiFi, code, and data line, there's one last scenario: that the profile itself is defective or the provider doesn't respond when the QR code fails. That can no longer be fixed from Settings.

That's where it matters which provider you purchased from. If your current provider's support only responds by ticket with days of delay—or doesn't respond at all—and you have your trip coming up, that's the time to consider a change. PuraSIM offers 24/7 support in all languages via email and WhatsApp, so if the profile doesn't activate just before boarding, there's someone responding in real-time, not a form that gets answered the following week.

Coverage is available in over 200 destinations, and activation on a compatible phone with good WiFi takes approximately one minute once the profile downloads correctly. You can see available plans by destination in the international eSIM collection. And if you're also debating between eSIM and your usual operator's roaming, that comparison (including the cost of each option and when each is convenient) is in eSIM vs. roaming.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need WiFi to activate the eSIM?

Yes, to install the profile. The download is done via the internet, not through the cellular network, so without WiFi (or data from another already active line) the process will not proceed. Once installed, activating the data line and browsing can be done with the normal cellular network.

Can I install the eSIM before traveling?

Yes, and it's recommended. You can install the profile from home in advance and save data activation (and roaming) for when you land. You have 180 days from purchase to activate it, so there's no need to rush the process on the same day of your flight.

What if I don't have WiFi when I arrive at my destination?

That's why it's advisable to install the profile before leaving home, while you have stable WiFi. If you've already installed the profile in advance, you only need to activate the data line upon arrival, and that can usually be done even if the destination's WiFi is unstable, because the profile is already downloaded.

Does the eSIM activate automatically upon landing?

Not automatically on most phones: you have to go into Settings and confirm that the data line and roaming are turned on for that eSIM. Some phones do retain the configuration if you've used it before on another trip, but it's always advisable to verify upon landing.

Can I have the eSIM active alongside my usual physical SIM?

Yes, on most compatible phones, both lines coexist without problem. The part that needs to be manually checked is which of the two is assigned as the data line, because the phone doesn't always automatically switch to the newly installed eSIM.

What do I do if the QR code has already been scanned and doesn't work?

An eSIM QR code is only valid for one installation. If it has already been used (for example, because you tried it on another device before), the alternative is to install it with the manual code (SM-DP+ and activation code) that comes along with the QR.

How long does it take for an eSIM to activate?

With a compatible phone and a good WiFi connection, the complete installation and activation takes about one minute. What most prolongs the process, when it happens, is an unstable WiFi network or the step of manually assigning the data line.

In summary

Activating an eSIM involves three steps: confirming your phone supports it, installing the profile with WiFi (via QR or manual code), and manually assigning the data line if you have a dual SIM. Most "could not activate" issues are explained by one of these three points, not a damaged profile.

If you've checked all of this and the problem is still with the provider —no response, no real support when you need it before a flight— that's when it's worth changing. PuraSIM covers over 200 destinations with 24/7 support in all languages via email and WhatsApp, and once you purchase, you have 180 days to activate when it suits you. You can review plans by destination in the international eSIM collection linked above.
