Before buying an eSIM for your trip, the first question is: Is my phone compatible? Here is the complete list of smartphones with eSIM support, updated to 2025, with instructions to check for yourself.
How to check if your phone has eSIM in 30 seconds
The quickest way to check:
- iPhone: Settings → General → About. Look for "EID Number" in the list — if it appears, your iPhone has eSIM. Also in Settings → Cellular → Add Data Plan.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → SIM cards → Add SIM or eSIM. If the option appears, the device is compatible.
- Universal alternative: Dial *#06# and check if an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears in addition to the IMEI. The EID confirms eSIM support.

How many eSIM profiles can my phone store?
The technical specification allows for multiple profiles, but each manufacturer implements its own limits:
- iPhone: Can store up to 8 eSIM profiles, but only 1 or 2 active simultaneously (depending on model)
- Samsung: Up to 5 profiles, 1 active at a time
- Google Pixel: Up to 5 profiles
In practice, for travel, this means you can save plans for different destinations without having to delete and reinstall them every time you travel.
Phones WITHOUT eSIM support (most common)
If you have one of these phones, you will need a local physical SIM:
- iPhone 8 and older (up to X)
- Samsung Galaxy S10e onwards in the low-end range, and A-series below A54
- All Redmi and POCO from Xiaomi
- Most low-to-mid-range Chinese phones
- Models bought in China or India with non-eSIM variants
