Traveling to Cuba is an incredible experience, but arriving without data can ruin the first moments: no Google Maps to leave the airport, no way to find your hotel, no way to contact whoever is waiting for you. The solution is simple and has been the standard among experienced travelers for years: an eSIM for Cuba.
In this guide, we tell you everything you need to know before traveling to Cuba: what coverage you can expect in Havana, Trinidad, and Varadero, how many GB you really need, how to activate the eSIM, and the best connectivity tips from those who have already traveled there.
Spoiler: with PuraSim, you have local data from the moment the plane lands, with no contracts, no physical SIM, and no bill surprises.

Why do you need an eSIM to travel to Cuba?
International roaming from European and Latin American operators soars in Cuba: it is usually billed at a fixed daily rate, so the final cost depends on your operator and should be checked before you leave. A local eSIM gives you data at a local price, with no absurd daily limits and with the best 4G speed available in each area.
The difference between going with roaming and with a PuraSim eSIM is huge:
- Traditional roaming: fixed daily rate even if you barely use data, speed often limited to 3G, surprise bills when you return.
- PuraSim eSIM for Cuba: you only pay for what you contract, full local data at maximum available speed, activation in 5 minutes from anywhere.
In addition, with an eSIM you can keep your original phone number active to receive calls and SMS, as the eSIM operates in a separate virtual slot. You don't have to choose between local connectivity and your usual number.
In Cuba, where the only operator is ETECSA (state-owned) and all international eSIMs enter the island through a roaming agreement with that same network, having stable data from the first minute is especially important. Coverage in Havana, Trinidad, and Varadero is generally good, but there are areas where without a well-configured local eSIM you would be blind. If you want to better understand the technical difference between both models, we have a detailed comparison of eSIM versus traditional roaming.
PuraSim eSIM vs. Cubacel physical SIM vs. roaming: what suits you in Cuba
In Cuba, you actually have three ways to get data, and not all of them are self-explanatory. The most visible, the Cubacel physical SIM, can be purchased upon arrival at José Martí airport or at an ETECSA office, and it is the option that almost all tourist brochures recommend by default — but it is not necessarily the most convenient. Here's how the three compare:
| Option | Activation | Your usual number | Procedure | Data top-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PuraSim eSIM | Before leaving home, via QR | Remains active (dual line) | None, all digital | Instantly from the app or customer panel |
| Cubacel physical SIM | At the airport or ETECSA offices, with usual queue | Remains inactive while using the Cuban SIM, unless dual SIM physical terminal | Passport, form and payment usually in cash | Nauta cards or at the office, with frequent shortages |
| Roaming from original operator | Automatic on landing | Maintained | None | Cost skyrockets with use; surprise bill upon return |
For a first trip to Cuba, the physical SIM may seem like the "safe" option because it is sold by the country's own operator. In practice, the queue at the airport to get it can take you more than an hour just when you are most eager to get to the hotel, and you need cash to pay for it. If your phone also does not support dual SIM, you lose your usual number while you are there. Data coverage in Cuba: what you can expect
Coverage in Cuba varies quite a bit depending on the area. In the main urban and tourist areas (Havana, Trinidad, and Varadero), you will find 4G networks with a reasonably smooth experience for browsing, using maps, and messaging. Do not expect the same performance as in Europe during peak hours: the Cuban infrastructure is more limited and it shows, especially in the late afternoon and evening.
However, as in any destination, there are areas where the signal is more limited:
- Main cities: stable 4G, sufficient for light streaming, browsing, and video calls.
- Rural areas and nature: coverage can drop to 3G or even lose signal in remote areas.
- Transport: trains, ferries, and intercity buses have variable coverage; in cities generally good.
Key tip: as ETECSA is the only operator in the country, the real quality of your eSIM depends on the roaming agreement your provider has with that network, not just the coverage map you see on the website. Two "for Cuba" eSIMs can provide a different experience even if they promise the same on paper. If you want to understand how this agreement between operators technically works, we explain it in detail in what data roaming is.
To maximize coverage in Cuba, PuraSim uses the local networks with the best available infrastructure through local roaming agreements. This means that your eSIM automatically connects to the network with the best signal at all times.

How many GB do you need for traveling to Cuba?
This is the million-dollar question. The short answer: 3-5 GB (limited network). The long answer depends on how you use your phone during the trip.
Here is a guide to actual consumption by type of daily use:
- Basic use (maps, messages, occasional queries): 300-500 MB/day
- Moderate use (social media, photos, continuous browsing): 800 MB-1.5 GB/day
- Intensive use (remote work, streaming, video calls): 2-4 GB/day
For a trip to Cuba of the usual duration, our recommendation is to contract 3-5 GB (limited network). This is enough for most travelers with normal use: Google Maps constantly running, Instagram, WhatsApp, and an occasional search.
If you are going to work remotely or plan to make frequent video calls, upgrade to the next plan. PuraSim plans allow you to top up data if you run out, so it's not a problem if you fall short: you won't suddenly lose coverage.

How to activate your eSIM for Cuba step by step
Activating a PuraSim eSIM is as simple as scanning a QR code. There's no need to go to any store, no waiting for any shipment. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes:
- Purchase your plan on purasim.com for Cuba. You will receive an email with the QR code.
- Install the eSIM: go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add Data Plan (on iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (on Android).
- Scan the QR code or manually enter the activation data.
- Configure mobile data: make sure to select the PuraSim eSIM as the default data line.
- Activate data roaming in the PuraSim eSIM settings (necessary for it to work on local networks).
You can install the eSIM before leaving home and configure it to activate automatically when you arrive in Cuba, or activate it manually when you land.
Important: verify that your phone is eSIM compatible before purchasing. Most iPhones from XS, Samsung Galaxy from S20, and Google Pixel from 3 are compatible. Check the complete list on purasim.com. Local connectivity tips for Cuba
Beyond getting the right eSIM, there are some tricks that make a difference to keep you connected throughout your trip to Cuba:
- Download offline maps before you leave. Google Maps and Maps.me allow you to download maps of all of Cuba or specific cities. This way you can navigate without spending data when you are in areas with weak signal.
- Use airplane mode strategically. On long flights, trains, or ferries, activating airplane mode preserves battery and data. Connect to available WiFi if there is any.
- WhatsApp and Telegram over data. Calls through these apps consume much less than an international call. Configure them for high-quality calls only when you are on WiFi.
- Share connection carefully. Hotspot consumes data quickly, especially if there are other devices connected (laptop, tablet). Use it only when necessary.
- Carry some cash in Cuban pesos for backup wifi. In many squares and parks in Havana, Trinidad, or Santiago, ETECSA's public wifi zones are still operating. You need a Nauta card, which is purchased in Cuban pesos, so carrying some local cash will get you out of trouble if one day you prefer not to spend data from your eSIM.

What almost no one tells you about internet in Cuba
Cuba is a destination with its own connectivity logic, different from any other country in the Caribbean or Latin America. These are the nuances that are usually left out of generic guides.
Myth: "there is no internet in Cuba". False, although it was true for years. Since mobile data was activated on the island, connection exists and works in the main tourist areas. What remains true is that the infrastructure is limited, so the experience is not the same as in Europe.
Myth: "if I have coverage, I will have the same speed all day". Not exactly. Cuba receives most of its international traffic through a single submarine cable connecting the island with Venezuela, so during peak hours —normally in the afternoon and evening, when much of the country connects at the same time— the speed can drop significantly even if your mobile icon still shows full coverage. If you need to upload heavy photos, make an important video call, or download something large, it's better to do it in the morning.
Myth: "with the eSIM, I no longer need to plan anything else". The eSIM solves your data needs, but not everything else. If you need to make a traditional call to a Cuban phone number (a taxi, a private accommodation without WhatsApp), your data eSIM does not cover voice calls over the mobile network: for that, you still rely on VoIP over data or a local SIM with voice. Keep this in mind before assuming that "you already have total coverage."
Myth: "everything can be paid for with a card in Cuba". The Wi-Fi in many hotels and the Nauta cards in public areas usually depend on cash payment, and the Cuban economy operates with two parallel currencies. Precisely for this reason, it is not advisable to rely on hotel Wi-Fi as your primary plan: with your own data on your mobile, you avoid queues, currency exchange, and the uncertainty of whether the hotel Wi-Fi "works or doesn't work" that night.
One more note on privacy: some travelers prefer to use a VPN when connecting from public networks to protect their bank details or personal accounts, something advisable in any country with less mature network infrastructure. If you want to understand how to combine eSIM and VPN without complications, we have a guide on eSIM, VPN, and travel privacy.
Finally, if your route does not end in Cuba: many flights make a stopover in Madrid or other European cities before crossing the Atlantic. If your layover is long, activating an eSIM for Spain beforehand allows you to stay connected at the airport without relying on the public Wi-Fi of the terminal, and if after Cuba your trip continues through other countries in the region, we have specific guides such as the one for eSIM for Colombia.
Frequently asked questions
When should I activate the eSIM for Cuba?
You can install it on your phone before leaving home. Most PuraSim eSIMs for Cuba can be configured days in advance and automatically activated upon arrival at the destination, or manually when you want to start using it.
Is my phone compatible with the eSIM for Cuba?
Most smartphones manufactured since 2018-2019 are compatible: iPhone XS onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards, and many more. Check in Settings → General → About that your device lists 'eSIM' among its options.
Can I keep my usual phone number while using the eSIM in Cuba?
Yes. The eSIM works in a separate slot from your physical SIM. You can configure your local SIM for calls and the PuraSim eSIM for data. You will continue to receive calls and SMS on your usual number.
What happens if I run out of data in Cuba?
You won't suddenly lose coverage. You can purchase a data top-up directly from the PuraSim app or client panel. The top-up is applied within minutes, and you don't need to change your plan or buy a new eSIM.
Does PuraSim's eSIM work throughout Cuba?
The eSIM works through the local networks available in Cuba. In major cities and tourist areas, coverage is good (4G). In rural or remote areas, the signal may be more limited because ETECSA's infrastructure is concentrated in urban and tourist areas. We recommend downloading offline maps for those areas.
Activate your eSIM before you leave and arrive connected from the very first moment.
